Expedition Baja

Baja from top to bottom and back.
This exciting adventure is Rated 3 - 3 ½
(side trips rated as a 3 1/2) 14 Days.
This adventure is a combination of camping and lodging.

We will meet in Chula Vista, California . The location is at the Denny’s Restaurant at the “E” St./ Bonita Rd. and I-805 exit in Chula Vista, CA, USA We will leave at 8:00 AM or when we are all ready. You can buy your Mexican Insurance on line at Bajabound.com. There is a La Quinta Inn Motel at this location Ph. No. (619) 691-1211. The Mexican Government has a new charge for all visitors going into Baja Sur this is about $20. (This charge is not included in the cost of the adventure). I suggest that you change Greenbacks for Pesos to prevent being taken advantage of. In some of the more remote locations you don’t get a good exchange rate. The needs of each person is different and the amount of money that you exchange will be different. The use of credit cards for fuel is unheard of in Baja, you will need cash. This is a good place to use the "canned bank." (This is the hidden storage container made to look like a beverage container). For the amount of money for this adventure you should check the expected cost at the bottom of the page. You will have a opportunity to use a ATM machine every 4 to 5 days. I would recommend you convert a least $600.00. You can convert any unused pesos back to dollars when you return.

The trip will exceed 2,500 miles in length and will require enough fuel paid for with pesos. Pemex Gas is running about $2.25 per gallon and up to $3.00 out of 55 gallon drums. Your fuel milage will be from 75% to 50% of your pavement MPG.

Our trip will take us through Tijuana to the toll road along the coast to Ensenada Highway 1-D. The toll road will to Ensenada you will have to pay your own tolls. Do to the constant change in the exchange rate we will have to wait to see exactly what it will be (in the past it averages about $2.25 each). We will not stop at this time for trinkets or souvenirs as we will have plenty of time for that along the way back. The first part of the adventure is on pavement getting us away from the tourist border. The terrain is the coastal chaparral similar to southern California. The first and second nights we will spend around Catavina in a gorgeous desert area. We will take a side trip to the cave paintings and to the ruins of Santa Maria Mission. This is only the first in our 4-wheeling adventure, but an all day trip. We get to see a spectacular view to the gulf and Gonzaga Bay (we will be down below where we are looking in about twelve days). Back to the paved road again, Guerrero Negro for gas, supplies and Visas. Where we will take a short trip to Laguna Ojo de Liebre (Scammons Lagoon) for some whale watching. This is a time to look at nature and enjoy its splendor. We are headed to Santa Rosalia, gas and sightseeing. Next stop is Mulege for a nice hot shower and a relaxing evening night. Loreto and Ciudad Insurgentes will have to pass up for now as we want to reach La Paz by evening.. Enough having fun! We have more places to see and explore to the south. With gas it is off to Cabo San Lucas, (the back way) for relaxing on the beaches shop until you drop and party and nightlife. The next day you do whatever you want to relax, Para -sailing, go fishing, scuba diving, boating or just nothing. After the days resting it is time to leave to one of the prettiest and cleanest towns on the peninsula, Todos Santos. Back through La Paz for gas. We leave the highway for the mining town of San Juan De La Costa with peaceful bays. This is the remote and non-tourist Baja in its own beauty. The evening we will find us a remote beach to camp. We climb through the mountains for some outstanding vistas, old missions and Baja splendor. It is back through Ciudad Constitucion, where we will now head up the west side of the peninsula to La Purisima. Your route to Bahia Concepcion for more supplies. Mulege and the mountains draw us west again. Our need for fuel draws us to town. This is not for long as we find remote Vizcaino peninsula. We have a remote beach location and the worlds best beach combing . The newly paved road is quite a change from the last week of bumps. We will travel through one of the most unique valleys anywhere a (thorn forest). The unique desert will bring us back to the gulf. When we awake it to Bahia de Los Angles. We will just start to get comfortable with the pavement and it’’s on the dirt again, to San Borja Mission. Heading north again we take the turn off to the gulf. We have made it to the famous San Felipe. For those who wish, there is plenty of night life and good sea food in town. The showers and hotel bed really feel good! Morning will shop then turn our noses to the border. We will cross back into the United States at Calexico.
